What is an MOT test?

An MOT is a legal safety check that all vehicles over three years old must have once a year. At North East Auto Services, our DVSA-approved testers inspect your vehicle’s key safety features,  including brakes, lights, tyres, steering, suspension, and emissions, to make sure it’s safe and road legal.

How do I know which MOT class I need?

Most cars and small vans require a Class 4 MOT, but if you drive a larger van or light commercial vehicle between 3,000kg and 3,500kg gross weight, you’ll need a Class 7 MOT. If you’re not sure which class your vehicle falls under, our team at North East Auto Services can check for you when you book and will let you know which of our branches is the best option for you.

Can I drive without a valid MOT?

No – it’s illegal to drive a vehicle on public roads without a valid MOT (unless you’re driving it to a pre-booked MOT test). Driving without one can result in a fine, penalty points, and your insurance becoming invalid.

How early can I book my MOT?

You can book your MOT up to one month minus a day before it’s due and then keep the same renewal date for the following year. For example, if your MOT expires on 20th July, you can have it tested as early as 21st June and still keep the 20th July renewal date.

What happens if my vehicle fails?

If your vehicle fails, our testers will give you a failure certificate explaining what needs to be fixed. We can usually carry out the repairs on site and offer a free retest within 10 working days, helping you get back on the road quickly and legally.

How long does an MOT take?

A typical MOT test takes around 45–60 minutes. You’re welcome to wait in our comfortable reception area at any of our branches with free Wi-Fi and refreshments while we complete the test.
