MOT – Class 5 – the North East

North East Auto Services carries out Class 5 MOT tests at our branch in Peterlee.

Class 5 MOTs apply to larger passenger vehicles, such as minibuses, ambulances, and vehicles with more than 12 passenger seats. Because these vehicles carry groups of people, the checks are more extensive and focused on passenger safety.

During a Class 5 MOT we check:

• Lights, indicators, and electrical systems
• Brakes and braking efficiency (including load-sensitive valves)
• Suspension and steering systems
• Tyres, tread depth, and wheels
• Exhaust emissions and system condition
• Windscreen, washers, wipers, and mirrors
• Seatbelts, seating, and emergency exits
• Vehicle structure, floor, and underbody condition

Our workshop is equipped with the space, ramps, and tools to handle larger vehicles safely. Our testers have the training and experience to carry out inspections thoroughly and fairly.

I cannot recommend this garage highly enough. My situation was a bit of a nightmare: I was told by the police that I needed an MOT (not just sign-off by garage to say plates had been changed) because they deemed my number plates "illegal."

When I took the car in, the team here could have easily just performed the MOT and taken my money. Instead, they showed incredible integrity. They assured me that an MOT wasn't actually required for that specific issue, provided me with a printout of the official government guidance to prove it, and even signed it for me.

Unfortunately, the police wouldn't back down and insisted on the MOT anyway, despite it not being the correct procedure. When I returned to the garage, the staff were incredibly sympathetic to the runaround I was getting. They didn't make me wait or feel like a nuisance; they sorted me out quickly and professionally to help me get the paperwork finalized.

It’s rare to find a business that puts honesty and customer care above a quick profit. Top-tier people and top-tier service. If you want a garage you can actually trust, this is the place.

Although I didn’t end up getting any work carried out by the garage, I’m writing a review based on the response I received after AA SmartCare made an absolute mess of my recent booking. The needed work was booked in with the garage, but I received a call from AA saying it was no longer possible, so they rescheduled to the day before my MOT expired. On the day, it turned out that the work was never actually confirmed.

Upon ringing the garage, the gentleman I spoke to sounded genuinely deflated that yet another customer had ended up in this situation and explained the issues with using the AA service.

I wanted to leave this review for the open and honest communication I received as opposed to any work and it was very much appreciated.

First time using this garage and I’m thoroughly impressed. I contacted them via WhatsApp and received an instant reply; they booked me into the Seaham branch straight away and said they’d take a look that morning. Other garages I tried couldn't help until the following week, but I needed my car urgently.

I took the car in for my appointment, and in no time at all, they phoned me with the diagnosis and the cost. I needed everything fixed and they got it all done that same day! The location is great; I just spent time walking around Seaham, visiting a few cafes, and doing some shopping while I waited. A very professional and genuine team—I’ll definitely use them again and might even book my MOT here next time.

Someone reversed into me and ripped my number plate off. Came into the shop and fitted it for free in 5 minutes. Really appreciate it and will definitely be back for MOT’s etc.
